Sometimes life isn’t all about having answers.

We sought to gather people together to connect with games and catching up on May 30th. However, a week before the session, George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis, and protests were ignited around the country.

In the Connect session, we decided to pivot to discussing how people were feeling in the midst of the racial tensions happening around the country. It was a time where space was made for people to pour out their hearts to one another and to God, and for there to be a time of silence to grieve, listen, and commune with God in the midst of the events.

“And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast, that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”

In the midst of these times, it’s hard to know what to believe. It’s almost difficult to understand or trace how we got here. COVID-19 has blasted our communities, everyone being affected by it in some way, shape, or form. It has shaken the Church to the roots as we perceive what is community in the body of Christ. It even has set fire to pursuits and endeavors we may have been pursuing in the previous season. It’s difficult to move when nothing around you seems like sure ground.

We sought that sure ground by intentionally listening to that gentle whisper of the Holy One. We facilitated a Hearing God virtual session on April 30th to facilitate hearing God. From practices such as contemplative Scripture reading to listening prayer, participants partook in different methods to commune with God in order to perceive his presence in the midst of the tumult.
