Entering a New Year

Every new year we often create resolutions. At the same time, we often forget to count the cost of the resolutions. There’s a reason we live the way we do, and change is hard.

Jesus once said,

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’... In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. (Luke 14:28-30, 33b, NIV)

In Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, Greg McKeown covers three main areas of Essentialism:

1.  We have a choice

2.  Only some things are important/essential

3.  We can’t do everything

This year we encourage you to take the time to wait on God and hear his voice. He has given you gifts and a calling but he also gives us a choice to follow him or ourselves. What has God placed on your heart? Explore your past experiences, what you care about, and look at what you have felt a tug to work on.

Remember, not everything is important. Ask God to help you set proper priorities. What will last and what will not? We all have a limit to our lives. What can you walk in faith towards? Choosing one means you can’t do something else, but it also means you can focus your efforts more effectively.
