“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” by Martin Luther

I am an ordained minister who is currently ministering outside of regular pastoral ministry. My wife, two daughters and I attend Christ Our Peace Anglican Church in Spokane. It is a wonderful little community where we celebrate Christ's death and resurrection in everyday, shared life together. It is a living and worshiping community like I have never been a part of before. In the Anglican Church we just finished the season of Creation tide, a time when we celebrate God's creation and our role as caretakers and stewards of it. We also talk about our ability to create. How, as it were, we are created to create, not just as individuals but as a community. We are called and designed so that we can design and make. This is as a reflection of God’s own creativity and life, a way we are made in His image. The Creator creates beings who, like Him, create. It’s a wonderful thought, beautiful even, but this does not just apply to art. Parents create families, homes; we even have children who are born looking exactly like us. I have long been a creative in the Church; for almost two decades I have written song and verse meant to encourage the flock and build up the faith of those around me. One of my favorites, one I believe was God-inspired, is one written to remind us of, as one of my seminary professors was fond of saying: "who we are, and whose we are." I will leave you with the chorus that is based on Jesus’ words in the Gospel of John:

We are the sons of a Holy God

We are the ones who believed

We are the saints and the chosen ones

You are calling us free, You are calling us free
